Whale Watching At Kalpitiya

Kalpitiya, a nature hot spot and fascinating historic Dutch maritime town is now branding itself popular for its presence of Sperm Whales and the occasional Blue Whale which alone is a world class attraction of marine life.

The season to view these majestic creatures at Kalpitiya peninsula is between December to mid-April, after the south-west monsoon had spent its energy, the peak months being March and April. If the conditions are right, then during these months, spotting up to a group of 50 sperm whales makes a nature lover’s dream a reality.

The Sperm Whale, in the hunt of giant squids, dives several hundred meters in the ocean. Kalpitiya Peninsula with its continental shelf provides an ideal habitat to the Sperm Whale. Dutch Bay Tours offers its guests dedicated whale watching trips in Kalpitiya. Almost all of the whale sightings in the past have been chance encounters of people watching dolphins in-shore off the reef. Now Dutch Bay Tours offers a serious effort to go in search of whales beyond the reef which lies around 6 km out, roughly parallel to the peninsula.

The enthusiast will need to get the whales and the depths close to the continental shelf to be sure of the presence of whales straying to the dolphin line. Our boats equipped with sun roof, padded seating, and life jackets take you within a few feet and ride right past the swimming whales providing fantastic opportunities for photography in what will be one of the most awe-inspiring encounters with a wild animal you will have had to date!

By the way, it's a good thing we don't
smell like a skunk when we don't catch anything as a group of anglers, otherwise
our families would know for sure how miserable a fishing day we had. Getting
"skunked" (catching no fish) stinks!
